Silversea to enlarge and refurbish the Silver Spirit cruise ship

Luxury cruise liner Silversea is growing the size of its Silver Spirit vessel, aiming to elevate the on-board experience for travellers. Silver Spirit will dry dock at Fincantieri’s Palermo shipyard on March 5, after which it will undergo a “surgery” that will include the insertion of a pre-built section. According to Silversea, this is the first time this lengthening process has been done on a luxury ship.

Silversea’s lengthening of Silver Spirit is intended to enrich the public areas of the ship, making them more spacious. The interior design for the renovation was inspired by Silversea’s flagship vessel Silver Muse.

A 49-foot-long section that was pre-built will be inserted into the middle of the ship. As part of the expansion process, the ship will add 34 new suites. Also new to accommodation options is a Balsorono suite that is decorated with objects of personal meaning to Silversea chairman Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio di Balsorano de Clunieres.

Providing more space to mingle with fellow travelers, Silver Spirits’ remodel also includes the addition of a café and bar. The Arts Café will serve up coffee and tea and will be a place to read, chat or take in exhibitions and performances. For more potent drinks, guests can visit Dolce Vita, which mixes cocktails and live piano.

Silver Spirit is also getting a new spa and fitness center, enlarged and remodeled pool deck and new eateries. Despite going bigger, Silversea stresses that its services will still be personalized, with a ratio of about two crew for every three passengers.

Silver Spirit sailed on a final voyage to Dubai before her refurbishment. The ship docked in the U.A.E. city on Feb. 22. The construction process is slated to wrap May 1.

“Based on the wonderful feedback from guests sailing aboard our beautiful Silver Muse, we believe the comprehensive makeover we have planned for Silver Spirit will enrich the onboard experience and be equally appreciated by guests,” said Christian Sauleau, executive vice president of fleet operations for Silversea, in a statement. “They will see many of Silver Muse’s innovations and elevated comforts embodied by our reimagined Silver Spirit.”

In addition to emphasizing the on-board experience, Silversea is also appealing to travelers with rare destinations and experiences. The Monaco-based Silversea Cruises is taking travelers to remote locales in a collection of land experiences.

Designed as pre- or post-cruise excursions, Silversea’s inaugural Couture Collection includes trips to far-flung destinations such as Antarctica and Tibet. Tour operators are working to differentiate their offerings through off the beaten path destinations, looking to inspire frequent travelers with places they have not visited before
