East India Leather: Hidesign's Secret

pPuducherry-based leather good brands, Hidesign, has set up a small exhibit at Delhi's Select City Walk Mall that promises to take you on a historic journey with accessories made from East India (E.I) leather. Just like Scotland mastered the art of fine whiskies and the Germans aced automobile technology, one of the many things that India was known for was the rare East India leather tanned with vegetable dyes. This specific kind of hide is strong, luminous, and has a unique natural grain and is known for beautiful blonde sheen that glows through any colour that is hand rubbed onto it./p pandnbsp;/p pThis traditional method of vegetable tanning was discovered by the East India Company in the early 1800. In fact, by 1856 the British army used this leather for its accessories. Primarily crafted in Tamil Nadu, this unique leather was re-discovered in the 1970s by Dilip Kapur, Hidesign's Founder and President. He learnt that a number of notable fashion houses had used East India leather for their luxury footwear and bags in the past./p pandnbsp;/p pKapur's journey led him to find the last 20 E.I. tanneries surviving in India, and he worked to revive the art. "My excitement that the finest leather in the world was produced near Puducherry made me return to India to search for the few skilled tanners who had not yet given up the E.I. technique. I decided to dedicate Hidesign's research towards finding more innovative methods of vegetable tanning, something we have held on to over the past 38 years."/p pandnbsp;/p p style="text-align: center;"/p pandnbsp;/p pBesides the unique sheen and shade, this is the only sustainable and ecological process of tanning leather anywhere in the world. In addition, the natural elements also make the leather sturdy and soft, unlike the chemical processes. Hidesign, in particular, uses Myrobalan seed extract for tanning and the unique technique of Wattle bark feed-and-fill. This means that unlike chemical tanning that simply covers the material in a layer of pigment, this technique massages the natural oils into the hide to make it supple and long lasting./p pandnbsp;/p pThe exquisite pieces from East India collection by Hidesign are collector's items, as it is handcrafted and limited to a few pieces. The line for women includes 12 bags and seven wallets, while for men the brand has four bags and three wallets.
