W Hotels opens W Punta de Mita, its second hotel in Mexico

W Hotels Worldwide has opened its second property in Mexico, the 119-villa W Punta de Mita. Designed by Oakland, California-based Mister Important Design and the in-house team at parent company Starwood Hotels & Resorts, the newest W reflects the area’s bohemian surf vibe (it’s on the Pacific Ocean) and conveys the influence of the local Huichol people with a bright color palette, traditional Mexican folk art and accents, and artisanal tile flooring.

The W Punta de Mita offers 119 guest villas, including the 4,460 sq. ft., 2-bedroom Extreme WOW Suite. All villas and suites feature private balconies or patios, artisanal Mexican tiled floors and headboards fashioned from either surfboards or punctured tin replicating the design found in local churches.

The property’s Ocean Escape Villas were designed to invoke a historic fishing village, with private terraces and enclosed, open-roof patios overlooking the ocean. The Jungle Escape Villas, set further apart from the main property, leverage the view of the locale’s ancient trees and lush greenery. A Mexican-flag theme is conveyed in the colors and design of the Extreme WOW Suite, which features a swimming pool that circles around the suite’s island-like living room.

Among W Punta de Mita’s dining concepts is Mesa1, which is on a private island accessible by a series of stepping stones. Additional dining options include chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s Spice Market; the casual beachside Chevicheria, and the fiesta-themed Mexican Venazu, in addition to bars at the WET Deck and Living Room.

The hotel is also home to a 4,000-sq.-ft. spa, 2,600 sq. ft. of meeting/event space, fitness center and a surf shop. The Punta de Mita locale joins W Mexico City as the brand’s second site in the country and the fifth in its Latin American portfolio, which also includes W Santiago, W Vieques Island and W Bogota.
