A “Grand perfume museum” will open in December in Paris with the aim of discovering the process of creation and the power of smell through an interactive course “at the intersection of art and science.”
The new “Grand musée du parfum” museum will be located at 73 rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, in a heritage building covering a space of of 1,400 sqm with a large garden, which has previously hosted the fashion house Christian Lacroix.
Unlike museums opened by the perfume house Fragonard, this new museum is not linked to any particular brand, its founders have indicated to AFP.
Financed by private funds, the museum is supported by the French Union of Perfumery, which includes 66 houses of French perfume. The new museum will be an ambassador for luxury brands and for the French art of living, perfumery being one of the jewels of the French economy. Yet, despite international influence, the French perfumery did not have a suitable exhibition home in Paris until now, according to the founders of the museum.
The museum, which “will be based on the latest technology”, “will trace three major steps the history of perfumes from Egypt of the Pharaohs to the present, inviting to discover a unique olfactory collection consists of more than 60 scents feeling throughout the visit, “it is specified. This olfactory course was designed with the US company International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF), specializing in the creation of flavors and fragrances used in a wide range of consumer products.
The museum, whose president is Guillaume de Maussion, is run by a scientific and cultural council including Jean-Claude Ellena, Hermès former nose and today adviser, Sylvaine Delacourte, Director of Development Guerlain perfumes, or Patricia de Nicolai, founder of the eponymous house and president of the Osmothèque global perfume conservatory located in Versailles.
