I’ve travelled pretty extensively and feel I can truly say Guernsey is quite unique. With French street signs, English money and a strange French dialect all of their own that nobody seemed to speak, the identity of the place is muddled. Having said that, it has a peculiar charm; the look of a Mediterranean coastal town without the blistering heat, but with the added friendliness of British seaside folly.
Contrastingly, the stunning boutique hotel Ziggurat knows exactly what it wants to be. With mostly North African influence, it’s decorated in such a way that the overall features are clean and modern but the details give a very distinctive twist. Situated in the middle of the age old constitution steps, they proclaim loudly on their website that you should not stay here if stairs are a problem.
Whilst I agree with the statement I hope that it doesn’t deter too many from experiencing the delights of the boutique hotel Ziggurat, affectionately referred to by chirpy GM Paul as ‘The Zigg’. When chatting with various locals, I was pleased to hear that the word was well and truly out, the Ziggurat name is on people’s lips and they can’t wait to try. Safe to say you won’t find anything close to similar on the island or even, from my experience, in the UK and France!
Upon arrival you’ll need to buzz the doorbell and no doubt be promptly greeted by one of their multitalented staff. Even the front door makes a statement. Featured prominently on their website it has a little peephole door with wrought iron bars, somewhat reminiscent of a medieval fortress.
We then had the pleasure of making acquaintance with Heloise, a French hospitality intern with the warmest smile on the island. She led us through the reception area, which is cosy and chic, with Kilim throw pillows and carved stone statues, up to our room on the very top floor (more stairs!) which had the most phenomenal panoramic view of St Peter Port. Well worth the extra stairs!
The rooms are well equipped, with Ziggurat branded water waiting for you in the fridge, a large selection of teas, fresh Guernsey milk and full size toiletries! In addition to the clean comfortable room with a view, on the top floor there is a spacious roof terrace, which has an equally spectacular view in the opposite direction-perfect for your morning tea or coffee.
Much to our surprise and delight there was breakfast included. This excellent start to the day is not to be missed. Safe to say the boutique hotel Ziggurat will not be serving a standard fry up laden with grease! Hot and strong drip coffee is available to help yourself, as is cereal, fresh Greek yogurt, fruit juice and toast.
However, it is the hot breakfast which rather impresses-whether the eggs with spinach and a Moroccan twist, or the meaty option with local Guernsey sausages tickles your fancy, it won’t disappoint. I also really enjoyed the perfectly chosen, yet mismatched crockery and glassware. The beds may be comfy but do not sleep in!
The restaurant at The Zigg’ also serves lunch, dinner and a Sunday brunch (which I lament missing out on, having not been there on a Sunday). Weather permitting, you can book a beach hut on the glorious terrace! I highly recommend sipping one of their custom cocktails watching out upon the boats drifting in and out of St Peter Port, although it will ensure you won’t want to leave.
