Entrepreneurial series: Kriti Walia’s innovative luxury cakes business

In a brand new entrepreneurial series, CPP-LUXURY.COM talks to luxury business entrepreneurs. One of our interviewees is Kriti Walia who runs a highly successful luxury cake business based in Frankfurt but with big international ambitions.

What inspired you to create your business?

The joy of baking and creating chic wedding cakes and cupcakes became my passion way back in 2002 after I had given up my 8-year long career with Oberoi hotels. My curiosity in cake decoration was triggered when I baked and decorated a cake for my friend, which was much appreciated and cherished by all. At that point, I realized that cake decorating was going to play a major part in my life.

I turned this hobby into profession, post educating myself in the sugar flower artistry from the best in the industry both from UK and from US. I unswervingly trained directly under some of the world renowned and leading names in the UK Wedding cake industry.

I started my business is Egypt way back in 2002 and took it from there to Moscow, Russia and now in Frankfurt Germany.

How are your products different than the majority available in the market?

Cupolicious offers a range of very unique and different products that are not to be found easily in Frankfurt area. The German pastry and confectionary are very traditional in their choice, taste and presentation. Cupolicious offers cakes, cupcakes, mini cupcakes, cake pops which are not typically German pastry.

Our wedding cakes are bespoke; handcrafted flowers are used to decorate wedding cakes, the style is very modern and at the same time bohemian and vintage chic. Our unique style of cakes sets us apart from what is available and gives us an edge in the market.

How would your define creativity when it comes to profiling your products?

I am in a highly creative field of work. Each client is distinct and wants something unique that matches to their own personal taste. I have to therefore constantly think of making new styles of cakes with different elements incorporated into them.

My process of creativity starts when I meet with the clients and understand their vision for their cake. I create a mood board based on their invitations, bridal gown, flowers and décor and then sketch a cake based on that understanding. My inspiration for cakes comes from varied sources; nature being on the top of that list. I look at flowers in their most organic forms in the gardens and want to replicate the natural combinations on to my cakes. Another important source is fabrics and prints, to create textures. Some of the others being interiors, architecture, stationery etc.

Which are the markets that you are currently supplying to?

Geographically, at the moment we are catering to Rhein-Main area. We are based in Taunus area in Bad Soden. We cater to Frankfurt and all areas in and around.

To what extent do you cater to corporate events versus private ones?

We specialise in wedding and celebration cakes and that is where our main business is centered around. However, we also have a very big chuck of our business coming from corporate clients. We have had the opportunity to work with some very known corporations such as ING Diba band, Sparkasse Bank, luxury fashion houses such as Cartier, Tiffany’s, Douglas, Too faced, Kontrast etc.

What are your mid to long term development plans?

Currently we are a small company with a boutique operation catering to a niche market. We definitely want to expand and develop the scope and size of our operations, however at no stage transform into an industrial type operation. Our target is to do unique, bespoke and artisanal work for high end clients.

I would like to look at opening a training school where I can conduct workshops and share my leaning and experience with aspiring cake makers.

Do you consider supplying to luxury restaurant/ Hotels?

We are already associated with some of the upscale restaurants and hotels here in Frankfurt, some of them being Villa Rothschild, Kronberg Schloss, Kempinski etc.

We have worked with these hotels through our clients who choose those hotels as the venue for their wedding or celebrations. But yes, given the opportunity we would absolutely love to work with them directly.

Are there any product categories you might consider expanding into?

Our repertoire of products include cakes, cupcakes, cake pops and cookies. We do want to bring in Macron in future to that list. We also hope to expand our work to other cities in Germany should a great opportunity presents itself.
