Xian, Nanjing, Hangzhou – three dynasties (Qin – Ming – Song), three ancient capital cities, three Shangri-La hotels – in one trip
Shangri-La Nanjing is overlooking Xuanwu Lake, which features a large park, rife with temples, pagodas, pavilions and tea houses. The views of the lake from the hotel are fantastic. Make sure you book a room with a lake view!
The lavish lobby is adorned with large crystal chandeliers and paintings of plum blossoms, a recurring theme throughout the hotel. Most of the newer Shangri-La hotels actually reflect this bright interior design concept. I was pleasantly surprised to discover similarities with the Shangri-La Jing An in Shanghai, one of my favorite city hotels in the world and I was told that the same interior design team worked on both hotels.
Rooms are large, reflecting the same brightness as throughout the hotel. The design of the rooms and suites is dominated by beige lacquered wood furnishings on the walls, plum blossom motive on carpets, exuding a an overall feel of warmth and comfort. Rooms and not only beautifully appointed providing the utmost in comfort, but also advanced technologically: high-speed wi-fi internet, a business desk with a fully compatible plug board and a curved full-HD smart TV. The white marble bathrooms feature two sinks, a separate bathtub and a large rain shower.
Horizon rooms and suite guests benefit from access to the Horizon Lounge, which serves buffet breakfast, snacks, refreshments and cocktail drinks throughout the day. Located on the 40th floor, the Horizon Lounge features very high ceilings allowing for spectacular lake views. The Horizon Lounge also provides swift concierge and front office services.
Shangri-La Hotel, Nanjing proposes a wide variety of dining options including Jiangnan Wok, a Chinese restaurant specialized in Huaiyang cuisine, an all-day dining restaurant Cafe Xuan with interactive cooking stations and JIN Hot Pot, a dining concept where fresh assorted ingredients are cooked in a simmering pot of stock placed at the table. I enjoyed dinner at Jiangnan Wok, with exquisitely prepared dishes and a high standard attentive service.
During my stay, I had an exceptional experience at the CHI Spa, which I highly recommend. Besides an Asian inspired massage, I had a pleasant swim in the indoor heated swimming pool of the hotel. There is also a state of the art gym as well as Jacuzzi, sauna and steam rooms.
Service throughout the hotel is solid – intuitive, attentive, friendly, warm and with a passion to serve. I was particularly impressed with the staff at the Front Office, Concierge, Spa and Housekeeping. The hotel is ideal for both business and leisure.
