Here are some highlights from the auctionFor its fourth consecutive sale at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel in Mumbai, Christieandrsquo;s offered a mix of classical, modern and contemporary works from India, selling for a combined total of US$10.8 million. The auction that was led by 41 works from Abhishek and Radhika Poddarandrsquo;s private art collection included important works by noted artists like Tyeb Mehta and V.S. Gaitonde and collectively sold for an estimated US$4.3 million. andldquo;The Poddars have been collecting [art] since years. It is a very personal collection, built on artistic friendships and encounters, which makes it so special. The works of Indiaandrsquo;s modern masters resonated well with international and national collectors and included fiercely competitive pieces such as the beautiful Untitled piece by V.S Gaitonde andnbsp;or the great Untitled (Diagonal) piece by Tyeb Mehta that came from the collection of [the] Poddars. Gaitonde; the highest lot went under the hammer for Rs. 15,63,25,000/ US$2,339,310 and the second from the Poddar collection for Rs.11,43,25,000/US$1,710,805. andldquo;It is a fact that each sale in India was led by a work painted either by V.S Gaitonde or Tyeb Mehta, works that resonate well with international collectors too,andrdquo; opined Singh. Three lots in the sale sold for above 10 crore. Works by Meera Mukherjee, Hemendranath Mazumdar Bhupen Khakhar and S.H. Raza also received astounding bids. In the Classical section, an iconic Pahari series of Ragamala paintings sold for Rs.93,25,000, along with a rare stone figure of a mother Goddess, which sold for Rs.43,75,000. andldquo;In 2015, we introduced a small section of Classical Indian Art to the auction and within 12 months we were able to offer a standalone Classical Art auction, offering selected works from the 6th to the 18th century.
