Sotheby's to Auction a Masterpiece by FN Souza

pBritish auction house Sothebyandrsquo;s will host a modern and contemporary South Asian art sale at its headquarters in New York on 14th March 2017. Ahead of the sale, the house has scheduled an exhibition at the Leela Palace in New Delhi from 24th to 25th February. The exhibition will showcase 16 notable paintings by Raja Ravi Varma, MF Husain, and FN Souza that will go under the hammer in NYC next month.andnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pOn our wishlist today is one of the masterpieces from this lotandmdash;an untitled oil painting made in 1960 by Indian artist Francis Newton Souza.andnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pBorn in Goaandrsquo;s Saligao, Francis Newton Souza (1924-2002) was the founder of the Progressive Artistsandrsquo; Group (1947) along with renowned artists like SH Raza, MF Husain, and KH Ara. The artist briefly studied at the JJ School of Art in Mumbai, only to leave for London in 1949. Mostly surrounding the dynamics of the human body, his paintings were made using acrylic and oil paints./p pandnbsp;/p pThe painting in focus today is an untitled portrait of a lady (current owner of the painting) who Souza met at a coffee shop in 1960 London. Charmed by her looks, the artist requested her to model for his painting.
