The LohasmithMeet the Modern-Day Ironsmiths

pMinimal design, clean lines, and quirkiness are some of the qualities that define The Lohasmith, a Noida-based metal home decor brand. Founded in early 2016 by the husband-wife duo Meghna and Karun Malik, the decor label offers Indian designs with a more international approach. The brand sells accent furniture, bar racks, sculptures, and other handcrafted items made using antique brass, copper, and steel. Read on as Meghna Malik tells you more about the decor company./p pandnbsp;/p pWhile Karun Malikandrsquo;s tryst with decor began when he joined his familyandrsquo;s home decor export business, The Lohasmith was conceived when his wife and business partner suggested the idea. By her own confession, her heart was always in design and art. She says, andldquo; When we got married three-years-ago and moved into our first home, we learned that while there are a lot of companies selling decor and furniture, only a few good options were available to us for the quality we wanted. Then on a trip to the US we spent time on the idea and realised its potential.andrdquo;/p pandnbsp;/p p style="text-align: center;"br /Karun and Meghna Malik, Founders of The Lohasmith/p p style="text-align: left;"andnbsp;/p p style="text-align: left;"Through their research and planning the couple learnt that, thanks to social media, the modern Indian consumer is in the know of global design and styling trends. Vice versa, Indian handicrafts and the use of Indian crafting techniques are popular internationally. The Lohasmith, therefore, finds a balance between local craft and modern lifestyle designs. Besides metal, the brand also works with other materials such as glass, fabric, leather, and wood./p p style="text-align: left;"andnbsp;/p p style="text-align: left;"Each item from The Lohasmith is conceptualised and built at the brandandrsquo;s factory. Malik mentions, andldquo; We always add a traditional twist to our products. For instance, the Dawn Wall Art piece uses the traditional craft of Matharkaami wherein we use pure brass discs at the centre of the pieces. For our baskets and planters, we use wire weaving techniques that are inspired by the traditional technique Bainth which is a form of jute rope/cane weaving.andrdquo;/p p style="text-align: left;"andnbsp;/p p style="text-align: left;"Malik did find it demanding to conceptualise a comprehensive range in metal while balancing quality and price points. The duo was aware that metal wasnandrsquo;t rampantly used by the average Indian consumer to decorate homes in the past. While they needed to bring metal into furniture, they also needed to gain visibility with the right customers. Over these months, since the brandandrsquo;s launch, it is the exclusivity it offers that sets it apart from its contemporaries. Malik explains, andldquo; We keep our batch sizes small during production; so customers can expect new products regularly, keeping our inventory fresh and exciting. We also offer the option to customise pieces.andrdquo;/p p style="text-align: left;"andnbsp;/p p style="text-align: left;"Malik also hinted at future collaborations with designers for one-of-a-kind installations and complete collections.andnbsp;/p p style="text-align: left;"andnbsp;/p p style="text-align: left;"While currently, the brandandrsquo;s offerings are limited to a few exceptional pieces, one can expect a variety of beautiful decor designs from The Lohasmith in the near future.
