Ralph Lauren renews Luxottica eyewear agreement

U.S. apparel and accessories maker Ralph Lauren will continue to use Italy’s Luxottica Group as its eyewear licenser through 2027.

Luxottica announced Dec. 23 that its agreement with Ralph Lauren has been renewed. The eyewear category, both sunglasses and corrective, is extremely popular among consumer segments of all financial backgrounds, and serve as a prime point of entry for younger shoppers.

Eyeing the future
Ralph Lauren’s sunglasses and prescription frames are part of an exclusive license agreement with Luxottica. Through the agreement, Luxottica develops styles and distributes the frames worldwide under the Ralph Lauren brand logo, including Polo.

The relationship between Luxottica and Ralph Lauren has been renewed for the next decade, extending to March 31, 2017.

In February it was announced that Italian fashion house Valentino had signed a 10-year licensing agreement with Luxottica to translate its “coolness and style” into eyewear designs.

The decade-long licensing agreement between the label and the eyewear manufacturer will kick off in January 2017, with the first collection premiering early next year. Both Valentino and Luxottica share an Italian heritage and a made in Italy positioning, making this pairing a strong fit (see story).

Luxottica’s competitor Safilo, also based in Italy, recently renewed its partnership with Christian Dior for optical and sunglass collections, extending the agreement through 2020.

Dior, which has worked with the eyewear creator, manufacturer and distributor Safilo for about two decades, is choosing to continue the relationship through Dec. 31, 2020. As Dior stays on, fellow LVMH-owned brand Céline’s contract with Safilo will end next year (see story).
