The United States Postal Service will issue a collection of stamps honoring the late fashion designer, Oscar de la Renta.

Mr. de la Renta, who passed away in 2014, was best known for dressing celebrities and being the go-to designer for the nation’s first ladies. With a career spanning more than 50 years, the stamp collection seeks to celebrate the designer’s accomplishments and contributions to U.S. culture.

The stamps created in Mr. de la Renta’s honor include 10 images capturing the details of several of his gowns. The series also includes a black-and-white portrait of the designer.

Mr. de la Renta was known for his innovative designs and attention to detail. His fashions worked to elevate the U.S. on an international stage and brought attention to New York as leader in fashion.

The Postal Service’s art director Derry Noyes designed the stamps while the featured portrait of Mr. de la Renta was taken by Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin.

“The new year is shaping up to be exceptional as the Postal Service continues to produce stamps that celebrate the people, events and cultural milestones that are unique to the history of our great nation,” said Mary-Anne Penner, U.S. Postal Service director, Stamp Services.

“We are very excited to showcase these miniature works of art to help continue telling America’s story as we add to the lineup of 2017 stamps announced earlier,” she said.

Stamps are a common way for a country to honor notable individuals, industries or locations.

In 2013, Britain’s Royal Mail honored 10 revered British automakers, including Aston Martin and Rolls-Royce, with a set of stamps that showcased vehicles from an industry heyday in the 1960s and ’70s.

The “British Auto Legends” collection celebrated Jaguar Land Rover, Lotus, Rolls-Royce and other top automakers. Since stamp collecting is a hobby cherished around the world, the stamp series likely gained esteem from outside of Britain while still elevating each honored brand’s native reputation (see story).
