From Grasse to Mumbai: Manan Gandhi's Journey in Perfumes

pBe it petrichor, the nostalgic scent accompanying first rains, the aroma of brewing masala chai, or the fragrance of a flower, one tends to associate scents with memories. In a chat, Manan Gandhi, founder of Bombay Perfumeryandmdash;a Mumbai-based fragrance houseandmdash;traces his journey from Grasse to the city of dreams, while speaking of creating fragrances that capture the local essence of Indian cities./p pandnbsp;/p p style="text-align: center;"/p pandnbsp;/p pGandhi was organically driven to a career in fragrances as his family has been in the industry for 35 years. With a front-row view of how the supply chain in the perfume industry works, Gandhi, after completing his Masters in International Business from Skema Business School in France, moved to the French town, Grasseandmdash;the perfume capital of the world. He created a start-up that supplied natural ingredients to leading European fragrance houses. And in 2015 he decided to create Bombay Perfumery to connect with India in a modern way. He says, "I wanted to create fragrances that are complex and confident, while not being clichandeacute;d or safe. We use familiar ingredients like cardamom, pepper, jasmine, and ginger, with a unique twist given to each fragrance; each evokes a strong memory of a city.andrdquo;/p pandnbsp;/p pGandhiandrsquo;s journey had its own challenges; the tough one being convincing people that a home-grown fragrance brand could also be at par with go-to international labels. He worked on creating a niche that eventually led to the growth of Bombay Perfumery. He adds, andldquo; While most perfume brands focus greatly on glitzy marketing campaigns and packaging, we believe in focusing all our attention on whatandrsquo;s inside the bottle. Our fragrances use very interesting ingredients sourced from off-beat locations across the world and, of course, India. Weandrsquo;re also working on a unique business model where we retail our fragrances only through our web store.andrdquo;/p pandnbsp;/p pWhile city-inspired perfumes like Seven Islands, Chai Musk (Mumbai), Madurai Talkies, and Calicut form the core of Bombay Perfumery, it also has regular fragrances like Moire, Sulawesi, and 1020 in its portfolio. At the end of it all Gandhi aims to build a community around his brand. He explains, andldquo; We plan to build interesting collaborations and produce strong content revolving around the label. We also plan to host events that are immersive, interactive experiences for Indian buyers.andrdquo;/p pandnbsp;/p pTo learn more about the fragrances offered by Bombay Perfumery and purchasing them, log on to BombayPerfumery.com./p pandnbsp;/p pstrongMore On andgt;andgt; a href="../../content/luxpresso.com/style/perfumes" target="_blank"Perfumes/a/strong/p
