French couture house Christian Dior is marking its 70th anniversary by giving each of its seven head designers their due.
From the brand’s eponymous founder to its newly instated first female creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri, each designer will be featured in a dedicated tome published by Assouline. The first in this anthology, “Dior by Christian Dior,” will be released in December, with other volumes to follow over the next two years.
Passing the baton
Dior was founded in 1947. After Mr. Dior, the house’s aesthetic has been reimagined under the hands of Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano, Raf Simons and Ms. Chiuri.
Published in honor of its 70-year milestone, Dior’s books feature photography from Laziz Hamani.

Priced at $195, the first in the series captures on film archival garments kept at museums and institutions. This 504-page tribute to Mr. Dior’s mark and creations for his own house is written by fashion historian Olivier Saillard.
Future books in the anthology will be released in 2017 and 2018.
Often brands choose to mark milestones in print, turning to publishers for retrospective tomes.
For instance, Italian fashion house Fendi celebrated the 50-year tenure of head designer and creative director Karl Lagerfeld with an exclusive book.
The book launch was held during the Cannes Film Festival last year with models such as Kendall Jenner and Chanel Iman in attendance, and the occasion also marked the opening of Fendi’s new boutique in Cannes. Fendi’s “Fendi by Karl Lagerfeld” offers consumers a unique exploration of the house’s archives and pays homage to Mr. Lagerfeld’s contributions and career (see story).
