Italian fashion label Marni’s founding designer Consuelo Castiglioni has announced she is leaving the brand.
Ms. Castiglioni founded Marni with her husband, Gianni, in 1994. With her departure, Marni becomes just one of many established labels to see their creative directors step down for one reason or another.
Moving on
Marni was purchased by OTB in December 2012, which became full owner of the Italian label last year. OTB also owns Diesel, Maison Margiela and Viktor & Rolf.
In a statement Ms. Castiglioni said, “These were hectic and exciting years which absorbed all of my energies to create a project I am proud of.
“Thanks also to the constant support of my family who allowed me to stay true to my idea, I built a brand with a precise and recognizable identity,” she said. “The time has now come to dedicate myself to my private life.
“I thank all the people who believed in this project and who, with loyal dedication, have helped me along this fantastic journey.”

Marni spring/summer 2017 behind-the-scenes
As Ms. Castiglioni steps down as creative director at Marni, OTB has immediately appointed Francesco Risso.
Mr. Risso comes to Marni most recently from working with Miuccia Prada on her womenswear collections. A graduate of Central Saint Martins in London, Mr. Rissi has also worked with designers Anna Molinari and Alessandro Dell’Acqua.
“The world pays tribute to the original vision on Consuelo, and to a unique brand which we are proud to have in our group. I wish her the very best,” said Renzo Rosso, president of OTB in a statement.
“I am happy to welcome Francesco, whose talent will contribute to writing a new chapter in the history this house which is Italian at heart and global in spirit.” he said.
“I am confident that the creative team and the management of Marni, which have contributed to this success, will continue to make this brand reach exciting new goals.”
Mr. Risso’s first collection for Marni will walk the runway at Milan Fashion Week this coming February.
Last week on Oct. 12, Italian fashion label Roberto Cavalli became the latest house to part ways with its creative director.
Designer Peter Dundas’s tenure with the brand ended after only a year and a half in the position, during which he oversaw menswear, women’s wear, accessories collections and licensing. The news broke on the same day that Roberto Cavalli outlined plans for reorganization as it aims for profitability (see story).
