Gucci’s Alessandro Michele is lending his creative talents to curate the sixteenth edition of A Magazine, a collaborative fashion and art publication.

Since becoming creative director at Gucci, Mr. Michele has established the house as one of collaboration, often pairing with artists on exhibitions and special-edition projects. On his own, Mr. Michele has worked with the motifs created for the house of Gucci outside its immediate brand categories to further introduce and translate the brand’s codes under his direction for a greater audience.

Curated by
A Magazine Curated By invites a new fashion designer, group or house for each edition, with the creative serving as guest curator. A Magazine’s guest curators include Thom Browne, Rodarte, Riccardo Tisci and Iris Van Herpen, among others.

The publication was developed “carte blanche” by Walter Van Beirendonck in 2001. The free-rein concept allows the guest curator to explore a theme from their personal perspective.

Mr. Michele worked with the A Magazine team for the publication’s sixteenth edition, set for worldwide release in November. In the 280-page issue, Mr. Michele has included exclusive content exploring love.

For the issue, Mr. Michele tasked out an unprecedented roster of international creatives to offer their perspective on the phrase, “blind for love.” Each was asked to use the phrase as a starting point, which has resulted in more than 40 distinct narratives included in the November 2016 issue.

Mr. Michele’s extensive list of collaborators include Annie Leibovitz, Bruce Weber, Chloe Sevigny, Florence Welch, Gia Coppola, Grace Coddington, Jared Leto, Madonna, Tavi Gevinson and many others from across creative verticals, many of whom are a friend of the designer or a Gucci collaborator.

The cover of A Magazine shows a mist-covered landscape with a large, translucent “A” laid over the view. In the top left corner Mr. Michele’s curation is mentioned. Issues retail for approximately $20 at current exchange rate in international markets.

On its social media accounts, Gucci has shared imagery from A Magazine Curated by Alessandro Michele’s interior pages.

The romanticism of Mr. Michele’s designs has been translated from clothing and handbags to art installations, and even home decor.

Gucci’s creative director tried his hand at home furnishing design in a collaboration with shelter publication Cabana magazine.

Since taking the reins as creative director at the Italian firm, Mr. Michele has left an impression on the fashion industry by updating Gucci’s look in a fantastical way that blends its codes with modern accents. Extending the Gucci aesthetic to a collection of bespoke chairs, the designer’s collaboration with Cabana was exclusively available on online marketplace 1stDibs.

The six limited-edition chairs were only sold on 1stDibs’ marketplace and were inspired by the Chiavari seating Mr. Michele used for Gucci’s Milan runway presentation in September 2015 (see story).
