The owners of London’s luxury department store are looking to open a smaller Harrods in Florence. The proprietor is the Qatar Holding, who purchased it from Mohammed Al-Fayed in 2010 for 1.5 billion pounds.
Representatives of Qatar Holding were interested in the former premises of Banca Toscana, Palazzo Portinari Salviati on via del Corso, once the home of Beatrice, Dante’s beloved. With only the ground floor available for shops and businesses — the upper floors will be converted into apartments — they discarded the idea. The point of attraction is the former Borsa Merci (Commodities Exchange) now owned by Benetton on via Por Santa Maria, currently occupied by H & M whose rent will end up soon. There is a possibility that Benetton and Harrods may share the space.
Also of strong interest is the Loggia del Grano (former grain market) once home to the cinema Capitol. The building went up for auction recently, but there were no buyers.
Harrods has outlets in 11 European and Asian aiports in addition to a temporary shop in Porto Cervo, Sardinia. It is estimated that the London flagship store rings up receipts of one million pounds daily just between the 9 am opening and 9:30.
