Birthday Trip: F. Scott Fitzgerald's Favourite Places

p style="white-space: normal;"Be it emThe Beautiful and Damned/em or emThe Great Gatsby/em, his literary works make F Scott Fitzgerald's weakness for travel pretty evident. One of the finest fictional writers of the 1920s, on his birthday today, we take you on a trip around the globe in true Fitzgerald style./p p style="white-space: normal;"andnbsp;/p p style="white-space: normal;"span style="font-weight: bold;"The United States/span/p p style="white-space: normal;"New York inspired a number of Fitzgeraldandrsquo;s works. In fact, in emThe Great Gatsby/em, the enchanted metropolitan twilight that is referred to is actually New York City. Fitzgerald lived in the city in 1919 as a young boy, and in the late 1920s with his wife, Zelda Sayre. Fans can visit the St. Patrickandrsquo;s Cathedral where he got married, and The Plaza, where he stayed. The Plaza even has a special Fitzgerald Suite./p p style="white-space: normal;"andnbsp;/p p style="white-space: normal;"Besides the Big Apple, Fitzgerald briefly visited New Jersey, where he stayed at the Peacock Inn boutique hotel. In 1932, he made The Don CeSar hotel at St Pete Beach, Florida, his home. The Floridan Hotel even offered him the Pink Palace room he stayed in, where Sayre briefly coped with her mental disorder./p p style="white-space: normal;"andnbsp;/p p style="white-space: normal; text-align: center;"br /span style="font-style: italic;"Image via a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.theplazany.com/rooms-and-suites/the-fitzgerald-suite/"The Plaza/a/span/p p style="white-space: normal;"span style="font-weight: bold;"Paris/span/p p style="white-space: normal;"Fitzgerald and Sayre first visited Paris in 1921. They stayed at the Saint James Albany, a 17th-century building. On their second trip, they stayed at Hotel des Deux Mondes, where he wrote the emTales of the Jazz Age/em. If youandrsquo;re in the city, donandrsquo;t forget to visit the Auberge de Venise, a place where Fitzgerald reportedly met Hemingway in 1925./p p style="white-space: normal;"andnbsp;/p p style="white-space: normal; text-align: center;"br /span style="font-style: italic;"Image via a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.hoteldes2mondes.com/hotel-en-photo/?lang=en"Hotel Des 2 Mondes/a/span/p p style="white-space: normal;"andnbsp;/p pspan style="white-space: normal; font-weight: bold;"Monte Carlo/spanbr /The French Riviera proved to be a great getaway for Fitzgerald and Sayre in the 1924 and 1925; a time when the author was writing his magnum opusandmdash;emThe Great Gatsby/em. The couple lived at Handocirc;tel de Paris, St Raphaandeuml;l. Besides soaking in the sun here, they even visited Juan-les-Pins, near Antibes, where they rented a picturesque seaside villa called St. Louis. It has now been turned into a luxury boutique hotel called Belles-Rives; a must-visit for emGatsby/em fans./p p style="white-space: normal;"andnbsp;/p p style="white-space: normal; text-align: center;"br /span style="font-style: italic;"Images via a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.hoteldeparismontecarlo.com/"Hotel de Paris/a/span/p p style="white-space: normal;"andnbsp;/p p style="white-space: normal;"span style="font-weight: bold;"Switzerland/span/p p style="white-space: normal;"Fitzgerald once quoted, andlsquo;Switzerland is a country where very few things begin, but many things end.andrsquo; Ironically, in the 1930s, he visited the country to treat his wifeandrsquo;s deteriorating mental health which ultimately led to her demise a few years later. While Sayre was hospitalised for treatment in Geneva, Fitzgerald lived at Handocirc;tel de la Paix in Lausanne./p p style="white-space: normal;"andnbsp;/p p style="white-space: normal; text-align: center;"br /span style="font-style: italic;"Images via a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.hoteldelapaix.net/index.php?lang=en"Hotel de La Paix/a/span/p p style="white-space: normal; text-align: left;"span style="font-style: italic;"Main image courtesy: BCCL/span/p p style="white-space: normal; text-align: left;"andnbsp;/p p style="white-space: normal; text-align: left;"span style="font-weight: bold;"More On andgt;andgt; /spana style="font-weight: bold;" href="http://luxpresso.com/lifestyle/travel"Travel/a/p p style="white-space: normal;"andnbsp;/p p style="white-space: normal;"andnbsp;/p
