Whiskey has an odd but special association for Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne. “Whiskey… it’s such a volatile drink,” he said. “Upon pouring a drink It’s like accepting that you may become a werewolf … And really… Who doesn’t want to become a werewolf ??? Ha…” The cryptid connotations of the liquor and the psychedelic sounds of the band itself no doubt inspired the label design for the Flaming Lips Brainville Rye Whiskey.
The whiskey is produced by Few Spirits, an Evanston, Illinois based distiller. Justin Helton, a music industry designer and fan of The Flaming Lips, approached Few Spirits with the goal of creating a “truly special product” for one of his favorite bands. The bottle design is eye-catching, though details about the contents are currently a little vague. The truncated tasting notes mention “whiskey stone-fruit, apple and pear notes over a background of sharp spice.” The Brainville Rye is produced from a mixture of locally sourced corn, rye, and barley, and is aged in charred American oak barrels.
The whiskey will be officially released in October, with a limited number of bottles (5,000 to be precise). Each bottle will retail at $125.
