Designer Calvin Klein has publicly hinted that Raf Simons, former creative director of Dior women’s wear, will join his eponymous brand.
Mr. Simons left his position at Dior after a three-and-half-year tenure in October 2015, citing contractual disagreements with the house as the cause of his exit (see story). Since then there has been a snowball effect of high-profile designers leaving infamous ateliers, with many stating that the stress and responsibilities of designing collection after collection can be taxing.
Paging Mr. Simons
Since Mr. Simons announced his departure from Dior, he has dedicated his time to working on his namesake label, a desire many creative talents have expressed when parting ways with fashion houses. Mr. Simons’ spring/summer 2017 collection will be presented at Pitti Uomo in Florence on Thursday, June 16.
In the meantime, rumors have suggested that Mr. Simons will eventually land at Calvin Klein when his non-compete clause with Dior ends in July. The rumor was furthered by the departure of the brand’s menswear and women’s wear directors Francisco Costa and Italo Zucchelli in April (see story).
Calvin Klein has yet to release an official statement on the matter, but its namesake founder added to the rumor mill during an interview with Sirius XM’s Andy Cohen. During the conversation, Mr. Klein said, “They just finally made changes in the design staff. They won’t announce [the designer’s name] publicly because it’s under contract. But the whole industry knows.”
While Mr. Klein’s comments are not very subtle at pointing to Mr. Simons, he continued saying, “They are doing something that I had hoped the would have done, which is replace me… Find someone who can with a singular vision oversee everything that is creative.”
Calvin Klein was sold to PVH Corp in 2002.
