A 15.38-carat pear-shaped pink diamond has become the most expensive stone of its kind to sell at auction.

The stone, sold by Cora International on May 17 via Sotheby’s auction, was sold for $31.5 million during the auctioneer’s Magnificent Jewels Sale in Geneva. The rare, sought-after diamond, called the Unique Pink, was the highlight of the auction due to its clarity and pure structure.

According to the Fancy Color Research Foundation, pink diamonds have increased in value by more than 350 percent since it began its price index. Understanding the fluctuation in pricing structures of colored diamonds can assist jewelers in planning and also may sway investors toward stones of color rather than traditional white diamonds as an asset (see story).

Fetching $31.5 million, the Unique Pink Diamond set in a simple ring setting was sold to to a private buyer from Asia who bid for the stone over the phone. Broken down by weight, the buyer paid $2,052,094 for each carat.

The Unique Pink Diamond’s sale beat the previous auction record held by a 16.08-carat fancy vivid pink diamond. Sold by rival auctioneer Christie’s, the “Sweet Josephine” stone was bought for $28.5 million in November.

The Sotheby’s auction itself has also set a new world auction for a jewelry sale. Sotheby’s recorded a sales total of $175.1 million. The previous record was in 2015 with a jewelry auction totaling $160 million.

“Exactly one year after having set the world record for a jewelry sale, Sotheby’s Geneva has raised the bar once again with a great sale and a great result for the Unique Pink,” said David Bennett, worldwide chairman of Sotheby’s International jewelry division in a statement. “It is difficult to image a diamond that better illustrates the term vivid pink than this outstanding stone.

“The color is simply astonishing and, for its size, it is in my experience truly unique,” he said. “We set out to curate a sale that would speak to today’s collectors and the response has been overwhelming — confirmation, if ever it were needed, that when you have the right material, demand is as deep as it’s ever been.

“This was the sale that had the perfect mix of great gemstones and jewels, the vast majority of which were sourced from private collections.”
