The Fontenay, new luxury hotel to open in Hamburg in 2017

The Fontenay, the first new luxury hotel for Hamburg in 18 years. Slated to open in Autumn 2016, The Fontenay will be located on the site of the former InterContinental hotel on Alster lake in the Rotherbaum district.

This is the project of billionaire Klaus-Michael Kuehne, and word on the street is that it’s cost over 100 million euros. (Kuehne has a proven track record with the transformation of Mallorca’s Castell Son Claret into a five-star hotel with a Michelin star restaurant.) The concept is to create a luxurious crash pad for business travelers to his northern German city, but also entice international leisure guests.

The hotel features 130 rooms and suites, a 1,000 sqm luxury spa, a fine dining restaurant, a garden restaurant and a bar. Room sizes start from 43 sqm and boast floor to ceiling windows with views of the Alster Lake.

The building has been designed by Hamburg architect Jan Stormer, and will feature a “sculpture-like architecture that mirrors the fluid lines of the lake and surrounding parkland”, with a white ceramic tiled facade, and a 27-metre high atrium.
