Food Review: Going Back to Basics at Indigo Restaurant

p/p pandnbsp;/p pIt has been more than a decade and a half since Indigo first opened its doors to Mumbai in a quiet lane behind the famous Taj Mahal Hotel. Celebrating 17 years of this gastronomical journey, the restaurant recently hosted us to a delectable dinner in the presence of Anurag Katriar, CEO, deGustibus Hospitality and Executive Chef Jaydeep Mukherjee to celebrate this jubilant moment.andnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pstrongThe Restaurant/strong/p pstrongbr //strong/p pA restored old colonial bungalow, Indigo stands as the first restaurant in Mumbai that introduced the concept of an outdoor Sunday brunch. A brainchild of master chef Rahul Akerkar and deGustibus Hospitality, it today is being run by two very passionate individuals - Anurag Katriar and Chef Jaydeep Mukherjee. Discreet, the villa lookalike restaurant features gorgeous interiors with big pillar candles lit across the old-fashioned windows. andldquo; It was back in the 90andrsquo;s when we were looking for a place in Mumbai that was charming, and that is when we spotted this house which was earlier a Hyderabadi restaurant ; we later converted it into a plush fine dining restaurant, andrdquo; said Anurag Katriar. Indigo was built by the famous architects Bijoy and Priya Jain, who transformed the antique colonial villa into a beautiful restaurant. The interiors feature five different dinning spaces, each identified by the colour they host. The colours in the three rooms below are yellow, crimson and blue, while the section above features a terrace dining setting adjacent to the private dining room (which was earlier the cigar lounge), tinted in burgundy with velvet furniture and a private bar for intimate gatherings.andnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p p style="text-align: center;"/p pandnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pstrongThe Menu/strong/p pstrongbr //strong/p pThe one thing we loved about Indigo was the menu, which as always, does not get affected by the innovative food trends spotted across the new restaurants in the city. andldquo; The menu being Rahulandrsquo;s innovation, we ensured since the beginning of Indigo to not let social fads muddle with what we serve. We, till date, have our dishes crafted andnbsp; from local produces like seafood, and will not want to add-on variety just to fit in,andrdquo; said Chef Jaydeep.andnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p p style="text-align: center;"/p pandnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pWe started our culinary journey with the lobster bisque which was comforting and touched our soul. Even though we did not fancy the bread crust floating on the bisque, the French broth with the rich aroma of the seasoning, and the creamy texture of pureed vegetables, complemented the tangy flavour of the lobster. The soup was followed by a salad platter of grilled artichokes and seared mushrooms tossed in coriander seed vinaigrette. The menu served that night paired well with the cocktails, especially the kiwi infused sparkling drink. However, you must consider pairing your meal with some wine as Indigo is well-known for its coveted range of fine wines. In fact, the servers and attendants are well-versed with the spirits, knowing well which one will pair with the food you ordered. While the meat delicacies are amazing, especially the tenderloin and the pork belly, Chef Jaydeep recommended the sea bass for the third course. Considered a complicated seafood choice, the sea bass at Indigo was divine with every bite we consumed. From the crusty skin to the succulent meat; the seafood here is a total sellout.andnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p p style="text-align: center;"/p pandnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pThe sweet-toothed will love the desserts served at Indigo; alongside French confectionaries like Guava Bavarois and Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta, we recommend you to dig into the exotic collection of homemade ice creams. From passion fruit to the plain vanilla and the Belgian chocolate, your meal will seem incomplete if you donandrsquo;t binge on a scoop.andnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pSo while you may have heard of the amazing Sunday brunches Indigo hosts with a live band andnbsp;entertaining guests; try hosting a dinner for a few friends here and you will not be disappointed one bit./p pandnbsp;/p pemA meal for two will cost you approximately INR 4000 andndash; INR 5000 with alcohol, and INR 3000 without alcohol. Reserving a table prior to your visit is recommended.andnbsp;/em/p pandnbsp;/p pstrongMore On andgt;andgt; a href="http://www.luxpresso.com/lifestyle/food-drink" target="_blank"Food andamp; Drink/aandnbsp;/strong/p
