Helicopter tours of NYC depart 7 days a week from their delightful lounge at Wings HQ in White Plains. From the moment you step inside, the facilities are fantastic. With complimentary beverages, newspapers and a flatscreen TV to keep you entertained you’d be fine waiting for hours, but Wings will only have you there mere minutes.

The pilot will shortly arrive to lead you out onto the tarmac, explaining the route you’ll be taking, the aircraft you’ll be taking and how the weather may affect the journey. Our pilot was Stuart, who was absolutely brilliant, his humour and patience (I may have been a little nervous as it was my first time in a helicopter) made the whole experience even more enjoyable. As I hopped in the front he explained the headsets, the lifejackets and which buttons not to press, before strapping in and switching on. We hovered along the flight path and ascended over the mansions of White Plains, upstate NY, before weaving towards the city while Stuart joked “We have to be 5 miles out of the airport before we started doing flips.”

We followed the rivers and roads while Pilot Stuart spoke to air traffic control, which you can hear over your passenger headsets. As well as pointing out landmarks and laughing at the enormity of some of the houses below, you can see the other aircraft they are referring to over the radio, which is novel. Not something you ever experience in a giant commercial aircraft. Upon reaching the Hudson, we approached the first bridge and Stuart asked “under or over?” before chatting with us about the bridges in San Francisco. Although he was just kidding, It’s apparently fine for helicopters to fly under the Golden Gate, which is lower than the George Washington. (It’s not a big gap!)

The skyline is truly incredible from up there, and I can only imagine how a sunrise or sunset flight would be magical. Flying over central park before dipping between the skyscrapers and landing at one of the few bases on the edge of city, is quite something. For a very special occasion, Wings Air is one of the luxury aviation companies in New York who actually facilitate in-air proposals – in case you’re looking to pop the question! Any photographers would also be in very good hands as Aerial Photography and Film is one of their areas of expertise.

After flying privately by helicopter, all other modes of transport will pale in comparison, so it would be unsurprising to want to learn to fly NYC yourself. Wings Air provide helicopter training for those adventurous souls! Should you wish to venture out of the city, Wings provide helicopter services in New York and beyond. Their charter services span not only the tri state area but the whole North East of the states, so you’re free to ski in Vermont, see Niagara Falls, or hop over to your superyacht in Rhode Island. The combination of professionalism and luxury facilities that Wings Air provide ensure that it is certainly a smooth start to your luxury travel experience. Fly NYC with Wings Air. You won’t be disappointed.
