Food Review: A Cantonese Affair at Sofitel Mumbai BKC

p/p pandnbsp;/p pSeems like Cantonese cuisine has commanded the attention this month, thanks to gourmands rejoicing the Year of the Monkey with andeacute;lan. In keeping with the flavour of the season, strongSofitel BKC/strong recently invited us to experience its Cantonese buffet served at the five star hotelandrsquo;s all-day dinerandmdash;the -Pondicherry Cafandeacute;. Celebrating the Chinese Year of the Monkey, the hotel invited Chef Allen Zhao from Pullman Shanghai Skyway to curate the authentic Cantonese flavours, taking guests on an unforgettable trip to Guangzhouandndash;the land of Cantons./p pandnbsp;/p pstrongThe Opening/strong/p pA cuisine low on oil and spices may taste a tad bit bland to the spicy Indian palate, but it must be said that the buffet presented at the cafandeacute; was a beautiful assemblage of lip smacking authentic Chinese dim-sums and gravies definitely worth savouring. Keeping up with the tradition of incorporating a cuisineandrsquo;s origin in their dandeacute;cor, the Pondicherry Cafandeacute;andrsquo;s gate opened to red Chinese lanterns complemented by a wall featuring Cantonese opera masks. For a few moments, it actually gave us the feeling of having entered the Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street junction, where passers-by are treated to a beautiful presentation of delicious food, gorgeous architecture and the spirited culture of Canton in Guangzhou. Each table was adorned with bamboo shoots and Chinese lamps designed with Chinese calligraphy. When it comes to authenticity of decor, the hotel earned itself a 10-on-10 from us./p pandnbsp;/p p style="text-align: center;"/p pandnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pstrongThe Food Trail/strong/p pWe were already made aware about the low salt and oil in the food we were going to indulge in; however, the dishes left us surprised as they blended beautifully with our Indian palates. We began our gastronomic journey with a bowl of warm soup with a plate of vegetable and chickenem dim-sums/em. The soup was as comforting as homemade chicken soup, garnished with mild spices and meat balls flavoured with rich savoury Chinese condiments. In fact, the dim-sums came with a mini platter of home-produced spicy sauces, one spiced with cut chillies, while another sautandeacute;ed with garlic and ginger shoots. Theem dim-sums/em came along with a live station counter with bowls of fresh veggies that you can have tossed and sautandeacute;ed the way you want./p pandnbsp;/p p style="text-align: center;"/p pandnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pThe main course presented dishes like emlamb prepared in black bean sauce/em, emgrilled exotic vegetables/em with empan-fried noodles /emand emhunan rice/em; sweet some sour and infused with in-house sauces./p pandnbsp;/p pThe dinner ended on a sweet note, as always, with emcrandegrave;me caramel custard pudding /emserved with a shot glass of emsesame fried honey dipped banh pho noodles/em (flat noodles). You can also indulge in some sinful scoops of delicious ice-creams like tiramisu or strawberry fresh cream served right next to the Cantonese counter./p pandnbsp;/p pConsidering Cantonese cuisine is all about artful cooking, the chef has some special preparations like emFried Cantonese Choy Sum, Kale with Garlic, Shrimps with Longjing Tea, Pan-Fried Codfish in Soya Sauce, Scalded Cantonese Water Spinach, Truffle Prawn, Stewed White Cabbage with Mushroom /emand emFish Maw Soup too/em, which you must try out the next you are there. After this evening, weandrsquo;re certain Cantonese will be our preferred cuisine to indulge in the next time we crave for Asian flavours./p pandnbsp;/p pOngoing for a while now, the Cantonese food festival will be on till March 6th, 2016. Head straight to Sofitel BKC this weekend and indulge in some unique Asian delicacies./p pandnbsp;/p pemAvailable for lunch and dinner, the menu is priced at INR 3,200 for two, inclusive of taxes./em/p pandnbsp;/p pstrongMore On andgt;andgt; a href="http://www.luxpresso.com/lifestyle/food-drink" target="_blank"Food andamp; Drink/a/strong/p
