Nordstrom to open men’s store in New York

Nordstrom is expanding the department store it plans to open near Columbus Circle. The company reached a deal to lease about 43,000 square feet at the base of 3 Columbus Circle, for a free-standing menswear store, according to a person familiar with the multiple transactions involved. Previous reports suggested the chain would open a discount Nordstrom Rack location there.

The store will be just steps away from 225 W. 57th St., where Nordstrom is building its first-ever full-size New York location, a 400,000-square-foot department store in the base of a 1,500-foot residential tower.

Nordstrom will take space on 3 Columbus Circle’s ground, second and basement floors. The space will also have a bar and possibly other leisure and entertainment elements, the source said.

The 26-story office building at 3 Columbus Circle is owned by a partnership between the city’s largest commercial landlord, SL Green, and the Moinian Group. To bring in Nordstrom, the owners had to get Bank of America to agree to relocate a retail branch on the building’s ground floor. The bank has agreed to move its 3,000-square-foot location to nearby 250 W. 57th St.

Clearing out Bank of America will allow the department store to situate the entrance to the menswear space near the corner of West 57th Street and Broadway.
