New Yorkers Are Actually Eating These $100 24k Gold Doughnuts

Sure, it’s a gastro gimmick, but even at $100 a pop, these doughnuts are selling like hot cakes because well… they are.

This latest over the top treat is the Golden Cristal Ube Donut, a purple-yam doughnut from Manila Social Club that’s been infused with Cristal champagne and lacquered in 24-karat gold.

Every single donut is handmade by Manila Social Club’s Executive Chef and Co-Owner, Bjorn De La Cruz.  To make them, dense purple yam (ube) is compressed into a mousse filling and injected into the pastry along with a champagne jelly. The sweet icing is infused with Cristal, and then the whole thing is gilded in 24K Gold Dust and 24K Gold Leaf.

De La Cruz and partners say that dozens of these flashy rounds ($100 for one, $1,000 for a dozen) have sold since they were launched last week.

Only pre-orders — and pre-payment — accepted.
