Located in the heart of Singapore’s CBD, with direct access to the Tanjobg Pagar MRT underground stations, Sofitel City Centre is one of the latest additions to the luxury hospitality scene. Predominantly catering ro a business clientele, the new Sofitel City Centre attracts a considerable number of leisure stay guests, especially considering the proximity to China Town as well as the short distance to Marina Bay.
The lack of a Spa is the only shortcoming of the new luxury hotel which is truly impressive in the amount of details, not to mention the high quality of the furnishings and finishes throughout the entire hotel. There is also an emphasis on art, probably the most striking being in the concierge welcome area of the ground floor - Singapour Je T’aime - a stunning nine-metre chandelier designed by Lasvit. This spectacular art installation of glass leaves that whirl through the lobby, comprises of 700 hand-blown glass crystals.
Sofitel’s commitment to culture and design is brought to life with an outstanding collection of custom-made furniture and artworks including designer uniforms accentuated with floral prints, evoking the strong botanic theme that runs throughout the hotel. The hotel’s interiors elegantly juxtapose vibrant rose gold accents with striking design features and botanical motifs, inspired by the sublime geometry of a traditional jardin à la française and the rich green spaces of Singapore, also known as the Garden City.
The hotel features 223 well-appointed rooms and suites featuring floor to ceiling windows – each with a predominantly cozy feel, making one feel in a home away from home. Rooms are among the largest in Singapore at the luxury standard. Some of the signature Sofitel elements are: the immensely comfortable ‘My Bed’ , complimentary minibars serviced by the hotel’s very own droid butler – Sophie The Robot ;Smart TVs and Bose Sound systems; large marble bathrooms with a Spa -like feel include a stand-alone soaking tub and a separate over-sized glass enclosed rain showers – there are also luxurious Lanvin amenities the quality of which I was very pleasantly surprised. Despite the noisy outdoors, rooms are impeccably soundproof.
Sofitel Singapore City Centre offers several dining outlets including the main Racines Restaurant, helmed by award-winning Executive Chef Jean-Charles Dubois, which offer both French and Chinese cuisines prepared by two distinct culinary brigades across four open kitchens. Sitting in a corner overlooking the beautiful pool and garden area, I had a wonderful mix dinner, with several Chinese dishes and a selection of French / Western Cuisine ones. Breakfast in the Racines Restaurant is a true feast, worth skipping the privacy of the Club Milesime, the hotel’s executive lounge.
Following the tradition of barrel-aged cocktail-making and the simple sophistication of martinis, Bar 1864 (homage to the foundation year of Tanjong Pagar’s docking industry) aims to provide the perfect after-work vibe. This bar will also be the home for the timeless ritual of Champagne sabering. Guests can enjoy Sofitel’s signature afternoon Hi-Tea and handcrafted gourmet bites and tapas throughout the day. During my stay, the hotel was finishing the details of Coffea, a one-of-a-kind casual chic take-away coffee station developed in partnership with Nespresso which actually supplies the entire coffee in the hotel, from the rooms to the banqueting.
In addition to its own SoFit gym, Club floor guests can enjoy access to the adjacent Virgin Active Fitness Club – Tanjong Pagar which will offer a range of wellness programs. A specially-designed In-Room Fitness Kit complemented with a series of workout videos is available in all rooms and guests can also enjoy the 30m infinity pool and spacious Lawn for rejuvenating morning yoga. The pool area is actually one of my favorite spots in the entire hotel, having spent a beautiful morning and an afternoon sunbathing a relaxing.
Although open less than a year ago, service throughout the entire hotel was at very high standards, staff going out of their way to please guests and provide a most personalized approach. Unlike some of the other Sofitel properties that I stayed at, staff throughout the hotel strive to address each guest by name – a service feature that obviously puts Sofitel at the forefront of the luxury hospitality sector.
