Hilton’s Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts is banking on the increasing desirability of San Francisco’s Transbay neighborhood for affluent travelers with the opening of its latest property.

The Waldorf Astoria San Francisco is the heart of a mixed-use development that will include entertainment, retail and office space. Situated on Mission Street between Ecker and 1st streets, the hotel is set to benefit from the redevelopment of the nearby Transbay Transit Center and its surrounding neighborhood.

Central hub
Waldorf Astoria’s hotel takes up the bottom 21 floors in a tower designed by architects Foster’s + Partners. Hospitality design firm Hirsch Bedner Associates created the interior environment, which includes a Peacock Alley restaurant and a spa.

Transbay features wide sidewalks and bike paths, making it easy for guests to travel to the neighborhood’s shopping and dining establishments or the 11 acres of local green spaces planned in the redevelopment.

More than 6 million square feet of office space is being added during the rejuvenation of Transbay, which may make the downtown area more of a key destination for business travel.

“With the revitalization taking place around the Transbay Transit Center, this neighborhood is poised to become a major hub for locals and global luxury travelers, which underscores Waldorf Astoria’s commitment of being in the center of coveted gateway destinations,” said John T.A. Vanderslice, global head, Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts, in a statement.

“Waldorf Astoria San Francisco marks our third property in California – behind La Quinta Resort in Palm Springs and the future Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills,” he said. “We are thrilled to accept this extraordinary opportunity to extend our unforgettable experiences, the finest amenities and True Waldorf Service up the West Coast.”

As it expands on the west coast, Waldorf Astoria is bringing its traditions along.

Hilton’s Waldorf Astoria will bring some of New York’s culinary culture to the debut of its Beverly Hills, CA property in 2017.

The Waldorf Astoria Beverly Hills will be found on the corner of Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevards. The 12-story property will include 170 rooms and marks the first new build property for the hospitality chain (see story).
