p/p pandnbsp;/p pUndisputedly the king of colour and dramatic designs, Manish Arora is by far one of Indiaandrsquo;s greatest exports in the field of fashion. His recent stronga href="../../content/Manish Arora Conferred the Highest French Honour" target="_blank"French Chevalier de la legion Dandrsquo;honneur/a/strong is the proverbial cherry on top of this multi-layered cake. We chat with him about his designs, inspirations and distinctive style/p pbr /br /Known for his brilliant designs featuring a dramatic play on colours and intricate craftsmanship, Manish Arora has been creating his trademark designs since 1997 when he first launched his own independent label. Heandrsquo;s exhibited his works all around the world, been a member of the French Federation of Prandecirc;t andagrave; Porter, been creative director of Paco Rabanne, and collaborated with a total of 54 brands! His designs have been adorned by international celebrities like Katy Perry and Rihanna and the recent French honour has only reaffirmed his global success./p pbr /br /strongTHE DEBUT MENSWEAR LINE /strong/p pstrong/strongbr /Koovs.com came up with the idea of the first menswear collection. I could not say no because it was my first opportunity to design menandrsquo;s clothes and I could do it in a way to test the market thanks to Koovsandrsquo; wide reach. Also, the price points are quite amazing. On my own I wouldnandrsquo;t be able to do that. The collection is in collaboration with my Indian brand which is called Indian by Manish Arora and so itandrsquo;s in sync with that, but, keeping in mind that itandrsquo;s for men./p pbr /br /strongCREATING FANTASIES /strong/p pstrong/strongbr /I like to express exactly what I feel. Probably thatandrsquo;s why my clothes become very recognisable and an extension of my personality. When youandrsquo;re honest to what you do, people recognise it./p pbr /br /strongINSPIRATION AND STYLE /strong/p pstrong/strongbr /We always like to believe everything is beautiful and perfect even if itandrsquo;s not. We believe, as a brand, that everybody should be happy and should smile and that is our design philosophy. I do not refer to Indian themes as inspiration, but I do use Indian craftsmanship and techniques. Inspiration could be anything. Itandrsquo;s the execution thatandrsquo;s the challenging part. My work is so complicated in its execution that the inspiration has to be very simple. If itandrsquo;s too complicated, it becomes messy, so I have to keep it simple so that everybody can understand it. Thatandrsquo;s why my brand is so recognisable./p p style="text-align: center;"andnbsp;/p pstrongDESIGNING FOR DIFFERENT MEDIUMS /strong/p pstrong/strongbr /When I design for different mediums, the ideology is the same of course, but the design process cannot be the same. If I was designing a car or a watch, Iandrsquo;d look at it from different perspectives. In fact, Iandrsquo;ve done 54 collaborations in total. From carpets to homeware and [brands like] Nivea, Swatch, Swarovski, Barbie and Hello Kittyandmdash;the list is endless!/p pbr /br /strongCREATIVE DIRECTOR OF PACO RABANNE /strong/p pstrong/strongbr /There were a lot of common factors between us, especially craftsmanship. His work was all about handwork [yet] in a different wayandmdash;and it was very complicated. So, there were a lot of similarities and it was kind of an obvious choice at that time. I thought we were right for each other and it worked out very well./p pbr /strongbr /CHEVALIER DE LA LEGION Dandrsquo;HONNEUR/strong/p pstrong/strongbr /It makes you more responsible in a way, and of course, Iandrsquo;m excited! Like I said, even in my speech, I thought itandmdash;to be recognisedandmdash;was a new beginning for Indian fashion. Some of the other previous recipients have been Amitabh Bachchan and Ravi Shankar./p pbr /br /strong60 seconds/strong/p pstrong/strongbr /strongLuxury to me/strong is an emotion; itandrsquo;s not a commodity. It doesnandrsquo;t have to be expensive. Itandrsquo;s a very feel-good situation./p pandnbsp;/p pstrongStyle/strong is personal. I can easily spot people who just dress up because they want to look stylish and I know people who feel stylish, so thereandrsquo;s a big difference there. You should know what you are and what looks good on you. Itandrsquo;s not about wearing something that s/he is wearing. Itandrsquo;s about what should I wear and what looks good on me./p pandnbsp;/p pstrongThe Manish Arora customer /strong/p pstrong/strongbr /They are adventurous. They want to stand out in the crowd and they know who they are./p pandnbsp;/p pstrongWhat next?/strong/p pbr /Iandrsquo;m starting to work on my next show which is in September in Paris./p pandnbsp;/p pstrongI love dressing/strongandhellip; One person that I have dressed and would like to [again] is Bjandouml;rk. She is somebody who has real personal style./p pandnbsp;/p pstrongIf I wasnandrsquo;t a designer, Iandrsquo;d be/strong making films. I would have loved to make films. Maybe in the future, but Iandrsquo;d need a lot of time for that./p pandnbsp;/p pstrongMore On andgt;andgt; a href="http://www.luxpresso.com/style/fashion" target="_blank"Fashion/a/strong/p
