Restaurant Review: Shamiana at Taj Mahal Palace Hotel Reopens with a Bistro Vibe

p/p pandnbsp;/p pWhen Zodiac Grill at Taj Mahal hotel shut, it must have broken a few hearts. But, the news of Shamiana getting a revamp must have brought back lost smiles. Opened in 1973 the all-day diner of Taj Mahal Palace Hotel andnbsp; started afresh recently with a renewed take on traditions. Hosts in the past to personalities like Shah Rukh Khan, the Royal family of UK and more, the revamped restaurant invited us to experience its lunch service, giving us a feel of the restaurantandrsquo;s informal hospitality.andnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pstrongThe Interiors:/strong/p pandnbsp;/p pThose harbouring memories of dining at Shamiana under the printed canopies will be pleasantly surprised as the new one is an all-white avatar. Bathed in mute shades of crandegrave;me and off-white, the restaurant boasts of a lively ambience with an open kitchen setup and an alfresco setting. While dark wood chairs and vintage chests still hold a spot at the restaurant, the ceilings are adorned with colonial-style fabrics that make for canopies. Apart from floor-to-ceiling folding doors that separate the indoor space from the outdoor, the restaurant features new architectural lines, keeping the look uncluttered. The highlight of the space is a separate wall that is decorated with old pictures from Shamianaandrsquo;s archives.andnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pBe it the Victorian-inspired wrought iron emjaali /emwork at the entrance or the stone emmandala /emset in the outdoor dining space, every corner of the restaurant celebrates Shamianaandrsquo;s age-old legacy.andnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pstrongThe Menu:/strong/p pandnbsp;/p p style="text-align: center;"/p p style="text-align: center;"spanemDouble Baked Cheese Soufflandeacute;/em/span/p pandnbsp;/p pAlthough the price points for the new menu have been lowered compared to the old menu, consciously trying to border on affordable luxury, a main course dish will still cost you around INR 1,000/-, exclusive of taxes. The celebratory menu we were hosted to featured dishes from the yesteryears, giving guests a chance to feel nostalgic. The menu commenced with entrandeacute;e options like Caesar salad, super food quinoa salad and double baked cheese soufflandeacute;. Being cheese lovers, we devoured the melt-in-mouth soufflandeacute;, which had an after taste and crunch of celery. andnbsp;Post the starters we ordered for the mains which featured chicken emlababdar/em, fish exotica and an American burger platter. While emlababdar /emwas served in a copper thali with Indian bread, emraita /emand homemade mix vegetable pickle, the fish dish was served with steamed risotto rice. andnbsp; It was the Fish Exotica that stood out; the soft basa pieces were cooked in coconut milk curry and were topped with bay leaf, tempered with black mustard seeds. It was delicious. andnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pAccompanying the meal was red wine sangria and a citrus fruit punch served in huge glass bowls; it served as great palate cleansers. Following our decadence was the highly-anticipated dessert platter. The dessert menu featured four dishes, namely The Super Sundae, Lemon Tart, Almond cake and gooey chocolate mousse with citrus jam base.andnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pWhile the dollops of homemade ice cream topped with crunchy wafers in the sundae were sinful, the chocolate mousse with orange juice punch brought the perfect end to our lunch.andnbsp;/p pandnbsp;/p pemA meal for two is priced at INR 5,000/- plus taxes.andnbsp;/em/p pandnbsp;/p pstrongMore On andgt;andgt; a href="http://www.luxpresso.com/lifestyle/food-drink" target="_blank"Food andamp; Drink/a/strong/p
